Talari: Creating a Network that ‘Thinks From Itself’

Kevin Gavin, CMO
Operational capabilities of networking industry have gone beyond its traditional boundaries—owing to the evolution of streamlined and efficient technologies. The evolution of Wide Area Network (WAN) into software defined WAN (SD-WAN) is an epitome of change, and a resilient trend that has allowed organizations to optimize their networking infrastructure vehemently. Empower organizations augment their productivity and efficiency through espousing SD-WAN is San Jose, CA headquartered Talari. Since their inception in 2007, the company has grown into a viable partner in the WAN landscape; as it has rolled out innovative SD-WAN solutions that portray the ability to ‘Think From Itself’.

As the demand for voice, video, and ERP driven WAN was becoming predominant, the customers of Talari were searching for solutions that can enable them to increase their network capacity. The fundamental requirement of these organizations is to obtain a reliable and an easy-to-control and administer WAN layout, which could assist them in meeting their end-to-end demands. Talari enabled its customers to meet their need through SD-WAN platform that has the tendency to proactively manage the terabytes of data streaming across customers’ networks every day. This platform has the ability to utilize all network links, including the reserved backup lines that are often left untouched. With company’s real-time, packet level intelligence— capacity, reliability, and performance—all are increased exponentially without having customers to lay a finger for it. “SD-WAN is managed through a single administrator interface, which enables customers to set bandwidth, policies, and channelize the traffic as per the current needs,” says Kevin Gavin, CMO, Talari.

At a micro level, a WAN is a collection of numerous links and nodes that forms the path for packets—Talari has intelligence located at every corner of this channel. The implementation of company’s SD-WAN starts with the positioning of set of appliances in every link and access routers of the customer’s WAN.
On coming in contact with the packets flowing in the links, a tag is incorporated in them by the appliances. These tags hold a sequence number and a time stamp. When these packets arrives at the destination, the IT admin can verify if there is any occurrence of loss of packet, and on the same note, indentify the malfunctioned link where the packet was evaded. “The tag gives an accurate and real-time view of the quality of every packet in WAN,” says Gavin. He further explains, “With the information obtained, a customer can know the capacity of their network links—correspondingly assign the priorities to these links to channelize the traffic.” Unlike the normal WAN, which just sends the data packets from one place to another, the THINKING WAN of Talari showcases the quality of the underlying links of the WAN, and also the applications, rules and policies employed by the customer. With this, customers can inculcate the benefits of resilient security and high reliability in their WAN architecture.

Talari has also introduced Talari Aware, which comes with the amenities of eminent management and administrative capabilities for SD-WAN. “With Talari Aware, customers can monitor the working of their WAN through a single monitor,” says Gavin. To conclude with a case study, Dayton Superior, a giant in construction industry, was able to make their WAN more flexible, operating with greater visibility across both MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and broadband Internet with Talari’s SD-WAN. For Dayton, the day-to-day management of their WAN become seamless that helped them to increase their ROI. Going forward, Talari intends to continue their successful journey by focusing on optimizing their customer’s WAN, and refine and evolve solutions based on customer’s requirements.
